About the National Wildlife Center

The Nationalt villkassenter works to spread knowledge and create engagement for salmon. It is our common heritage and our common responsibility.

Salmon have lived on earth for millions of years, but man's use of salmon and nature has meant that there is not much wild salmon left in our rivers. If the salmon are to be with us in the future, everyone must know and care about the salmon.

We want children and young people, as well as adults, to use our website to become a little wiser. In addition, you can visit us at Lyngdal, Lærdal, Namsos and Tana.

Purpose, role and tasks

The foundation is a public benefit foundation under the Norwegian Foundations Act. The founder is the state through the Norwegian Environment Agency. The Nationalt villkassenter was formally established on 23 December 2019, when approval from the Brønnøysund Register and the Norwegian Gaming and Foundation Authority was obtained.

Vision

The Nationalt villkassenter's vision is: Wild salmon - common heritage - common responsibility!

No one owns the wild salmon, but it is ours. It is therefore also our shared responsibility. A common understanding and knowledge base is a prerequisite for joining forces and taking care of wild salmon. This is the bridge we need to build. Then we are dependent on trust. There must be consistency between words and actions over time, communication must be honest, and it must be clear to everyone what we stand for.

The purpose is to:

  • communicate knowledge about the life of wild salmon, challenges and threats

  • contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of wild salmon stocks and their habitats

  • Facilitate dialogue, communication and interaction between stakeholders with interests that affect wild salmon and their habitats

Wild salmon

In this context, wild salmon refers to Atlantic wild salmon, sea trout, arctic char, Namsblank and barley landlocked salmon.

The role is to be a knowledge broker at the intersection of research and administration, a source of knowledge, a center for learning and skills development and an arena for dialogue and interaction.

The main task is to facilitate and communicate relevant knowledge about wild salmon to various target groups. Children and young people are a particularly important target group.

The foundation is nationwide with units in the municipalities Lyngdal, Lærdal, Namsos and Tana.

Target

Our main goal is for wild salmon to become stronger in terms of public awareness, engagement and dialog. In the long term, this will result in more viable salmon stocks.
