Find image and text that go together

Here you can test your knowledge of the salmon's life cycle and other species found where salmon live. Find the image and text that go together!

Tip. It is an advantage if you have read about the life cycle of salmon and salmon in the wild before doing the assignment.

Competency goals for grade 7, Science

  • explain how organisms can be divided into main groups and give examples of the characteristics of different organisms.
  • explore and describe different food webs and use this to discuss interactions in nature.

Throughout their lives, wild salmon have many different names.

Task

In this task, you have to find the right picture card for the right text card!

Here's how to proceed:

  1. Everyone in the class is given a card by the teacher - either with a picture or a text.

  2. Try to find the right picture card for the right text card! The teacher will explain in more detail how to do this.

  3. Good luck!

For the teacher

The assignment contains a number of terms used to describe salmon at different life stages. The assignment is therefore suitable as a summary when you have worked with the salmon's life cycle. The other animals included are most likely familiar.

There are many ways to use the cards. Students can each get their own card and work together to find the right image for the right text. If you print multiple sets, students can work in groups and compete to be the first to finish.

If you take the time to laminate the cards, you can make cards that have a picture on the front and information about another animal on the back. Then students can work in pairs on a card and the whole class can work together.

Use the attached file to print the cards in landscape format. The printout should be in color.

The animals are presented in the following order in the file:

  1. river mussel (mollusc)
  2. three-spotted stingray
  3. salmon roe (salmon eggs)
  4. yolk sac fry
  5. salmon parr or salmon pup
  6. smolt
  7. wild salmon
  8. spawning salmon (wild salmon in spawning suit)
  9. spawning pairs or "sneaky fuckers"
  10. char
  11. trout (this is a sea trout)
  12. benthic animals (a generic term for small insects that live on the bottom) - here we have placed a ring around a worm and an insect larva
  13. eel
  14. otter
  15. harbour seal (a type of salt)
  16. cod
  17. sea lice

More challenges? Find out more about the different species and create a food chain or food map.

Good luck!

Student booklet

The Nasjonalt villakssenter works for a stronger wild salmon and wants to promote the stream as an educational resource. Bring experiences from the classroom and put them in context with experiences outside. Many schools in Norway have a local stream. Even in our largest cities, there are streams you can visit. Contact us if you would like help, tips and professional development.

The student booklet Who lives in your river? can help with both preparation and follow-up work.
