Find similarities and differences between trout and char
In this assignment, you will find similarities and differences between trout and char. To make the task easier, you can use a Venn diagram.
You'll learn about the fish and a practical method for comparing information.
Competency goals for grade 7, science
- explain how organisms can be divided into main groups and give examples of the characteristics of different organisms.
- distinguish between observations and inferences, organize data, use cause-and-effect arguments, draw conclusions, assess sources of error and present findings.
Use a Venn diagram to find similarities and differences between trout and char
Here's how to proceed:
The teacher hands out a factual text about either trout or char. Read it.
Make a note of the facts about the fish you were given.
The teacher draws two columns on the board: one for trout and one for char. Together you write down factual information about both fish.
Draw a Venn diagram, i.e. two overlapping circles.
In pairs, work together to insert the information in the columns on the board in the correct place in the diagram. In the trout circle, insert facts that apply only to trout, and in the char circle, insert facts that apply only to char. In the field where the circles overlap, enter facts that the fish have in common.
Study the completed diagram and discuss in class whether trout and char have much or little in common.
For the teacher
If students are familiar with Venn diagrams, they can work independently or in small groups. A joint summary is always a good idea. If you have not used Venn diagrams before, it may be a good idea to start with simple examples that the students are familiar with. For example, compare dogs and cats or handball and football.
In the assignment, students will compare trout and char. An easier way to start would be to compare char and cod, or trout and cod.
